Well stated!
I actually read one of the major university websites (near my community)the other day and I must say i really disgusted me. The title of tthe page was "Tuition makes sense" and/or "Dollars and sense". I guess what really frustrates me is that someone is making policy arguments on behalf of those that are not able to channel their frustrations into this. You are correct to claim that across many universities and colleges there are no discussions being held that address the financial concerns of the affected!

I can definitely relate to what you are going through and have went through. Illness of any kind can throw you for a loop. I know from personal experience. Thank you for sharing your life experiences. It lets me know that I am not alone, and daring myself to dream again is a must.

I pray that you stay encouraged. I pray that I stay encouraged
and I just want you to know that your past does not dictate your future.

I too went to a world class university for graduate school and undergraduate school, and now after mistake after mistake
I am ready for a real career and more success.

Thank you for this post. As a current grad student, I've noticed how narrow the definition of success is in academia (and in America), and have been struggling to define it in my own way (which includes personal fulfillment, inspiring through teaching, and being a well-rounded person - not just publishing X amount, working at X university or being cited by X number of people). It can really be a challenge reject or rework these dominant notions of what success is (particularly since financial security often hinges on adopting them), and to make a life that is valuable and meaningful by your own standards, so I really appreciate (and empathize with) your post.

Congratulations! You sound like a wonderful person. I am so sorry to hear about the hard times and hope that you will have some good times. You have already accomplished a lot. It is so easy in the academic world to feel like a failure because we are competitive and judge ourselves against others. But you got a PhD. You published some stuff it sounds like, although not as much as you wanted. You prepped a lot of classes. You survived a lot of bad stuff. I hope you will feel able to praise yourself for all you have done. And build a life you can feel good about. Note: I found you following links from scatterplot. I also appreciated the teaching race resources link.

I teach soc theory and have students write a review of lit -- done it for 20 years and while I am never completely satisfied with their products and how I help them to get there -- I have some ideas I'd be happy to share privately with you! I enjoy talking about how to help students learn these skills.

Does your library offer any tutorials for students? The social sciences librarian did a great presentation for my students this semester. I also re-skimmed (I'd read it in grad school and will have my graduate methods class read it next semester) The Craft of Research (Booth et al 2003) and gave my undergrads pointers from there to help with writing their final papers. I think it would even be an acceptable (and worthwhile) required book in an undergrad methods course.
